Don Lemon and Vivek Ramaswamy heated argument video goes viral
Resurfaced on X, formerly known as Twitter, is a heated conversation between Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy and former CNN anchor Don Lemon.
When Ramaswamy came on Lemon's previous program, CNN This Morning, in April of this year, they had a discussion on Black history and Black Americans' experiences in the modern era.
"Here's a throwback video when Don Lemon got Vivek Ramaswamy ALL THE WAY TOGETHER," the caption said on a video that was uploaded to X, the platform that was formerly known as Twitter.
It captured the tense moment during the argument. When the tweet was published, it got 258,000 views. The National Rifle Association (NRA) was criticized by Lemon for his opinions, stating that it had a "big role" in ensuring Black people's freedom.
Ramaswamy informed Lemon, "Black people secured their freedoms after the Civil War; it is a historical fact, Don, just study it," but the anchor cut him off, saying, "It's not [fact]."
According to Ramaswamy, the economic measures implemented to aid the Black community had been "disastrous" for them.
"You are discounting a whole host of things that happened after the Civil War when it comes to African Americans, including the whole reason that the civil rights movement happened is because Black people did not secure their freedoms after the Civil War," Lemon stated.
Lemon cited remarks made by Ramaswamy a few days prior to their discussion at the NRA Leadership Forum, stating that the Civil War "was not fought for Black people to have guns."Ramaswamy was also criticized by the anchor for attempting to characterize the Black experience, particularly in light of the fact that Lemon is Black.
After telling producers to stop talking to him through his earpiece so he could focus on what Ramaswamy was saying, a frustrated Lemon told him, "When you are in Black skin and you live in this county then you can disagree with me."
"We have to be able to talk about these issues and be open regardless of the color of our skin..." Before stating that Black Americans were more equal now than they were in 1865—the year the Civil War ended—and 1964—the year President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into law, Ramaswamy informed Lemon.
Ramaswamy was called "infuriating" by Lemon, who also said that his "telling of history is wrong." He called the statements made by the Republican presidential candidate "insulting."
CNN fired Lemon shortly after this debate, leaving the reporter "stunned."
The anchor found himself at the center of several controversies, including accusations of misogyny and sexism, even though no explanation was provided for the dismissal.
Early in April, a report published by Variety detailed several claims of sexist behavior by Lemon toward a number of female coworkers, some of which were said to date back to 2008.
Lemon has refuted the claims, claiming that they are merely "anonymous gossip."
In February, he faced public scrutiny when he suggested Republican presidential candidate NIKKI HALEY "isn't in her prime, sorry" because she was in her 50s. Lemon later apologized for the remarks, calling them "inartful and irrelevant."
Some people have spectaculated whether it was debate between Lemon and Ramaswamy that got him fired from CNN.
"It really was one of the more bizarre things I've seen on television," Republican Representative Matt Gaetz said during an April episode of his podcast Firebrand. "So, I don't know if this clip contributed to Don Lemon's firing, but I sure hope it did."
